Blanck Mass

A couple of years ago, I wrote about a new Blanck Mass track that I assumed, at the time, was the first to appear from what would be the second album under that name from Benjamin Power of Fuck Buttons. But it seems now that ‘Hellion Earth’ was just a track he put up on SoundCloud once, never to have any proper home, because I’ve looked through the tracklist of his just-announced new album several times and it’s definitely not there.

But if ‘Hellion Earth’ is the sort of track that Power can just leave hanging in the ether/internet, then that’s got to be a good sign, right? Totally. Because, as I said, there is a new album coming this year. It’s called ‘Dumb Flesh’ and will be released on 12 May through Sacred Bones.

If the first track released from the album, ‘Dead Format’, is anything go by, it’s apparent why he decided to start with a clean slate. The track sees Blanck Mass take a darker, heavier turn, set in motion by ‘Hellion Earth’ but already some way further down the road it laid for itself. More Mondkopf than Brian Eno. It’s powerful, arresting, and I can’t wait to hear how it fits into the wider album.
