Dälek

Originally formed in 1998, over the course of five albums Dälek carved out a sound entirely their own. Dark, claustrophobic hip hop, built on layers of drones and distortion. Following 2009’s ‘Gutter Tactics’ the group ground to a halt, but last year was revived by MC Dälek and new album ‘Asphalt For Eden’ is now due for release on 22 Apr.

Although now missing co-producer Oktopus (who has recently been found working with Orka), the sound of the new material is still recognisably and welcomely Dälek. Released last month, the album’s first single ‘Guaranteed Struggle’ is bathed in drones, which individually would be oppressive but together are woven into something almost ambient.

Newly released is ‘Control’, which follows a similar track. It’s angry but tempered, giving it a late night feel – anger that’s building to something rather than already out on the street shouting.
