Approved: Mental Overdrive
By Paul Vig | Published on Thursday 16 January 2014
Norwegian producer Per Martinsen returned under his Mental Overdrive moniker last month, with the project’s ninth album, ‘CYCLS’, released through his own Love OD Communications label.
Released to coincide with the first anniversary of the end of the world (according to the Mayan calendar), ‘CYCLS’ is a hotbed of ideas and takes influence from house, techno and dub. It’s all cleanly done and Martinsen’s production skills are as deft as ever. Perhaps not instantly accessible, the LP is a good excursion nonetheless.
Playable below, ‘Sunstorm’ demonstrates one aspect of this sonically diverse album, this track is definitely Detroit techno leaning and reminiscent of early work by Dave Angel with its floating synths.
