Approved: Pearls Negras

Hailing from Rio De Janeiro, rap trio Pearls Negras released their debut mixtape ‘Biggie Apple’ late last year. Somewhat lost in the end-of-year silliness, the seven track collection makes too loud a noise to be lost for good.
With beats produced by British duo David Alexander and Jan Blumentrath, they deliver an angry concoction of English and Portuguese lyrics, designed to give an insight into the life of teenagers growing up in one of their home city’s poorest areas.
Tracks like titular opener ‘Biggie Apple’ and ‘Mr President’ set the tone for their sharp-tongued attack, but they also show off a more pop side on ‘Make It Last’, that stands out as almost twee amongst the rest of their output.
