Rökkurró

It’s ages since we’ve written anything about Rökkurró. Ages. More than three years, apparently. And almost four since they first appeared in this column. We can’t be held entirely responsible for this gap though, as since their 2010 album, ‘Í Annan Heim’, they’ve been a little on the quiet side.

Anyway, let’s not get into an argument about whose fault anything is, let’s just rejoice in the fact that Rökkurró are back. Back with a new line-up, a new sound (more synth, less cello) and a new album. That album will be released later this year, but the first single from it, ‘The Backbone’, is out next week.

Vocalist Hildur Kristín Stefánsdóttir says of the track: “We took a break from the album recordings, as we felt we needed new songs with a different feel from the ones we had already recorded. This song came through quite quickly. It changed quite a bit in the recording session and soon afterwards we felt this could be one of the strongest tracks on the album”.

As well as being available through all the usual channels, the band’s drummer Bibbi has created 120 unique sleeves for a special EP, which leads with ‘The Backbone’. You can buy your copy here.
