From its first foreign bars, Sharon Van Etten’s ‘Taking Chances’, the lead single from her new LP ‘Are We There’, takes a conscious stance apart from her mostly folksy previous work.
As a whole, it turns out, it’s not as profound a plunge into the unknown as it sounds at first, and fills out post-intro into a more habitual pose for Sharon. But it’s still a sure and subtle move into the R&B beyond, and opens up more soulful modes for singing about how much love sucks. Which is something Van Etten has known how to do from the off.
