Barack Obama guests on new Coldplay album
By Andy Malt | Published on Tuesday 24 November 2015
Hey, who did you get as a guest vocalist on your new album? Oh, nice. Nice. I only ask because Coldplay have got Barack Obama on their new record. But that’s really great about who you got. Really great.
Don’t be too downhearted, Obama didn’t join Coldplay in the studio or anything. Really they just sampled him. You could say he doesn’t really count as a proper guest. Not like the one you got on your album. But they did have to get special permission to use the recording of the US President singing ‘Amazing Grace’.
According to The Sun, the recording was made in a Charleston church back in 2012 at the funeral of shooting victim Clementa C Pinckney.
“We have a tiny clip of the President singing ‘Amazing Grace’ at that church”, said Chris Martin. “Because of the historical significance of what he did and also that that song being about, ‘I’m lost but now I’m found'”.
He added: “I met Barack Obama in the summer and one thing he said to me was, ‘Oh I have your songs on my iPod’, but I just thought, ‘Oh I bet he says that to every popstar he meets’. I can’t get my head around the notion that the President of the USA would have any of my songs on his playlist. It is just too surreal”.
Yeah, I know how he feels. I still struggle to believe that Barack Obama listens to the CMU Podcast. But he definitely does. Definitely. And so should you.
