Bassist departs Alt-J

Alt-J have lost a bassist, which I think makes them Alt-G, which is a copyright symbol, and sends out a good clear message about piracy in this digital age, I think. Well done, everyone.

So yes, the Mercury Prize winning band confirmed on Friday that Gwil Sainsbury is leaving, but they all seem to be on good terms still, and the rest of the outfit are still planning on getting all busy employing their musical skills on a second album.

Via Twitter the band announced: “With regret, Gwil is leaving Alt-J. This is purely a personal decision and as our best friend we support him completely”.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the group told CMU: “The three remaining members of Alt-J – Joe, Gus and Thom – and all at [their label] Infectious Music give their full support to Gwil and wish him only the very best for the future. Both Alt-J and Infectious would like to reassure fans that the band remain excited about the future and are set to return to the studio very soon to begin work on the follow up to 2012’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize winning ‘An Awesome Wave'”.

It’s not clear if Gwil will be replaced before work begins on the second album. But if there are any bassists out there with the surname Morrison, well, that’d be a nice little thing would it not?
