Former East 17 vocalist Brian Harvey has presented the results of an investigation into sexual abuse against children within the entertainment industry to Labour MP Simon Danczuk.

Danczuk tweeted a picture of himself with Harvey yesterday, saying that they’d had an “important meeting” the previous day. Though at the time he did not specify what they had discussed, only saying that he appreciated the former popstar’s help.

Speaking to BuzzFeed later, the MP explained: “It’s the first time I’ve met him. He came across to me as a really thoughtful person. The reason we were meeting up is to discuss some work he’s done around child sex abuse. He was sharing the information that he had gathered”.

He continued: “He feels quite passionately about protecting children and really wants to make a contribution. We know that show business is an industry that’s had a number of abusers within it. He’s providing a number of leads that I’m keen to follow up and that’s exactly what I’ll do. I’m pleased he’s done the work he’s done. We had a good chat. I’d be happy and keen to meet him again”.

Last year, Danczuk published a report exposing child sex abuse by one of his predecessors as MP for Rochdale, the late Cyril Smith. He has also pushed for public enquiries into other historical allegations of child abuse within Westminster, and is compiling a report on the subject reaching beyond the alleged activities of MPs.

The meeting between Dancuk and Harvey was apparently set up by the latter’s local MP in Walthamstow, Stella Creasy. As you might remember, Harvey previously attempted to present his findings to David Cameron by turning up outside Downing Street and shouting.
