Music Nation

Other notable announcements and developments today…

• Channel 4 has commissioned another series of ‘Music Nation’, the Dazed Group’s tastemaking/instructive music TV show. Starting on 5 Nov with a Ewen Spencer-directed short titled ‘Open Mic’, the various programmes will cover the London grime, Glasgow’s ‘art-school pop’ and the 1990s-era British Asian rave scene. Details here.

• Mercury-al pop lady FKA Twigs has directed a short film titled #throughglass for Google Glass, whilst wearing and incorporating… well, Google Glass. All of which means Google Glass is finally, officially, cool. Check the clip, which features Twigs tracks ‘Video Girl’ and ‘Glass And Patron’, and lots of hip hop body-contorting, right now.

• As has been on the cards since last spring, indelible model, socialite and ‘actor’ Cara Delevingne is gonna have a go at making it as a popstar. Apparently, says The Sun, she’s already written her first single, with (inevitably) Pharrell Williams ‘on the mixing desks’, the idea being to sneak-release it “without warning, complete with video and global launch”.

• Park-life. Damon Albarn has told the Sydney Morning Herald that a) he’s in the midst of ‘reactivating’ his all-CGI side-band Gorillaz via a new record set to ‘drop’ in 2016 and b) has “fully written” an album for his other, other, other band The Good, The Bad And The Queen. Still nothing on the Blur front mind you. Park-life.

• Gwen ‘needs no intro’ Stefani released ‘Baby Don’t Lie’, her first solo single in eight years, yesterday. It’s co-written by hitmakers Benny Blanco, Ryan Tedder and Noel Zancanella and erm… I don’t think it’s all that great, really, if I’m being frank. Bit ‘blah’. Bit pitchy, even. 5/10. Here it is anyway.

• Jess Glynn and Clean Bandit are re-teaming on a follow-on collaborative track to this year’s mega-hit ‘Rather Be’. ‘Real Love’, which in a pop-world’s first is credited to ‘Jess Glynn + Clean Bandit’ (that’s ‘+’, instead of ‘feat’) will be released on 15 Nov. High-impact-sway in time to its inspirational pop classicisms over at this link.

• Five-man band Pond, aka the out-wigged cousins to Tame Impala, are to release a new record titled ‘Man It Feels like Space Again’ via Caroline Records on 26 Jan 2015. Behold the new video for featured track ‘Elvis’ Flaming Star’ right here.

• Billy baldy Corgan has released the lead track off of Smashing Pumpkins’ immodestly-titled forthcoming LP ‘Monuments To An Elegy’, which is coming forth on 9 Dec. The song, the title of which is ‘Being Beige’ (subtitled ‘World’s On Fire’), is here for those who want to listen to it.

• Many-stringed London pairing Public Service Broadcasting will lift off their cosmic-concept-driven new LP ‘The Race For Space’ – which is set to be released on 23 Feb – via a series of springtime live dates, starting on 22 Apr at the Corn Exchange in Brighton, and lighting last at London’s Roundhouse on 7 May. Listings and tickets (those available from this Friday) are via this link.
