As music industry shindig MIDEM gets underway in Cannes today, over twenty export offices from across Europe have announced the launch of the European Music Export Exchange Network, which will work “towards the common goal of increasing the circulation of European repertoire”.

Lots of countries have export offices and – while their form, funding and actual operations vary greatly – they usually exist primarily to help ‘export-ready’ new music talent to build audience and industry connections away from their home territory.

The new network of these organisations says that “our common goal is to export music and increase the circulation of European repertoire”, to share ideas on the best ways to achieve just that, and to “contribute to political dialogues and processes in that context”.

EMEE will meet three times a year, with Anna Hildur Hildibrandsdottir of the Nordic export programme NOMEX taking the role of Chair, alongside Peter Smidt of BUMA Cultuur in Holland as Vice-Chair and Virgo Sillamaa from Music Estonia as Secretary.

Says Hildur: “Music remains one of Europe’s most prized cultural and economic assets, and the creation of this network is hugely significant given that support and approach to our sector is being reassessed at EU level”.

She goes on: “The European Commission has chosen the music ecosystem as the best example of a sector strongly influenced by the digital shift, built on small and medium-sized businesses, and with a strong potential for growth and job creation. This goes hand in hand with EMEE’s common goal to increase the circulation of European repertoire”.
