Karl Hyde and Brian Eno collaborate on LP

A pair of electronica greats at either end of the genre, Brian Eno and Underworld’s Karl Hyde, have convened to make a two-way LP titled ‘Someday World’.

Released 5 May by way of Warp, its nine songs are all composed and executed by both Eno and Hyde, with Eno co-producing throughout with newcomer Fred Gibson. It includes spots from guest musicians like Coldplay’s Will Champion and his wife Marianna, Roxy Music’s Andy Mackay, soul singer Don E, and Brian’s actual daughter Darla.

Karl Hyde says of his and Eno’s experience: “It’s a bit like being nine years old again. You have no idea what you’ve just been given, the record button has been pressed and you’re on. And then these unlikely patterns start to happen. The biggest surprise was discovering we both had a love of afrobeat, cyclical music based in live playing. When Brian played me these early tracks it was, ‘Oh my god, this is home! Can I borrow a guitar?'”

Likening the album’s architecture to a series of building blocks, Brian adds: “A lot of the constructions on the album were deliberately irregular and awkward. I had a big collection of ‘beginnings’ sitting around waiting for something to galvanise them into life, to make them more than just ‘experiments’. That something turned out to be Karl Hyde”.
