Prophets Of Rage

A supergroup made up of members of Rage Against The Machine, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill – Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, Brad Wilk, Chuck D, B-Real and DJ Lord, to be exact – is a thing now. Prophets Of Rage is its name, as had been assumed when a countdown timer went up on prophetsofrage.com earlier this month.

That timer was counting down to the announcement of the group’s first live show. When might that be? Well, you’ve missed it. It happened last night. They played the Whisky A Go Go in LA in aid of homelessness charity PATH, performing a collection of songs by their respective original bands.

“We can no longer stand on the sidelines of history”, said the band as they announced their existence. “Dangerous times demand dangerous songs. It’s time to take the power back. It’s time to make America RAGE again”.

An extraordinary number of mad things have failed to make America rage recently, so I’m not sure what effect this will have, but it’s nice they’re giving it a go.

“We’re not a supergroup”, Tom Morello told Rolling Stone. “We’re an elite task force of revolutionary musicians determined to confront this mountain of election year bullshit, and confront it head-on with Marshall stacks blazing”.

So it’s good they’re not being over the top about it at all. In the same interview, drummer Brad Wilk said RATM frontman Zack De La Rocha’s absence is because he’s “making a record right now”, while bassist Tom Commerford said that he had “got [De La Rocha’s] blessing” to form the new group. However, Morello said that he had “not spoken to Zack about Prophets or Rage”, which might suggest there was never any question of him being involved in the new project.

A new countdown timer is now teasing another announcement this Saturday.
