Sentric Music, best known as the music publisher for DIY songwriters, announced a new deal earlier this week with urban music firm Defenders Entertainment which, among other things, will see the launch of a similar service offering rights management services for self-published writers in the urban genre.

The deal also sees Sentric sign a sub-publishing agreement with the music publishing side of the Defenders Entertainment business, DMMP, plus the two companies will collaborate on signing publishing deals with new writers, producers and artists.

Confirming the deal, Defenders Entertainment MD Corey Johnson said that as soon as he learned how the Sentric business model worked, he decided “it was the only option for Defenders Ent and DMMP. There needs to be more transparency around YouTube, SoundCloud and live revenues, and Sentric provides that. Helping to bring Sentric’s core system and 28 day contract model to grime, rap, dancehall, Afrobeat and other urban genres is not only an honour but a massive responsibility”.

For its side, Sentric’s Creative Director Peter McCamley added: “We are delighted to be working with Corey. The access to urban talent he has through Defenders and a multitude of other networks is just incredible. We look forward to maximising that potential through our JV with DMMP and helping the exciting emerging artists and writers that come to him with our flexible 28 day model and global infrastructure”.
