Spotify to add Connect to premium service
By Chris Cooke | Published on Tuesday 3 September 2013
Spotify has announced a new feature to make its premium option feel more premium. Spotify Connect will make it easier for people using the streaming service via multiple devices, so that listening sessions can be paused on one gadget and picked up on another, or an iPhone or iPad can be used to control music playing via compatible wireless speakers.
It’s all part of the ongoing mission to make digital content work in a more joined up fashion across all devices, and to realise that long-held ambition where portable gadgets control home entertainment consumption too. The new feature will be available for premium users only, and will be rolled out to iOS devices and various wireless speaker systems in the coming months, with Android and other apps due to be added in due course.
In some ways it competes with Apple’s AirPlay system, which the Spotify iOS apps are already compliant with, though the plan is that the mobile device will only control music being played via wireless speakers, which will stream tracks direct from the Spotify server, reducing battery drain on the iPhone or iPad.
