Steely Dan guitarist and co-founder Walter Becker has died, aged 67, his website announced yesterday.

Becker had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed medical issue in recent months, which had caused him to miss some recent live performances. In an interview last month, bandmate Donald Fagen told Billboard that Becker was “recovering from a procedure and hopefully he’ll be fine very soon”.

In a statement to Rolling Stone yesterday, Fagen said of his friend and songwriting partner of 50 years: “He was smart as a whip, an excellent guitarist and a great songwriter. He was cynical about human nature, including his own, and hysterically funny … I intend to keep the music we created together alive as long as I can with the Steely Dan band”.

Steely Dan are currently scheduled to play in Dublin and London in October.
