Single Review: Andreya Triana – Lost Where I Belong (Ninja Tune)

Andreya Triana

Singer-songwriter Andreya Triana has appeared on Ninja Tune releases from Bonobo and Mr Scruff in the past, but has now been assimilated onto the label’s books with a three album solo deal, with this single the first release to appear under that arrangement. She has a voice best suited to soul and jazz, I think. There are shades of Alice Russell in there, though Triana’s voice is perhaps less sunny and a shade more complex.

‘Lost Where I Belong’ is built around acoustic guitar, with the strings akin to Zero 7 or D*Note. It works well, and stands shoulder to shoulder with both of those possible influences. The lyrics are well thought out too, if not overly catchy, and, all in all, the complete sound is hard to distinguish from that of Simon Green in Bonobo mode, though that’s probably not surprising given that he is handling production duties here.

Either way, I do look forward to listening to Ms Triana’s full debut album, as this has whet my sonic appetite somewhat. PV
