Approved: Amateur Best
By Aly Barchi | Published on Wednesday 2 November 2011
Amateur Best, since you ask, is the latest guise of London-based producer Joe Flory, also the mind behind electronic pop venture Primary 1. Having released his second Primary 1 album, ‘Other People’ earlier this year, his new incarnation finds him in fine artistic form; illustrating a comic book series and crafting music to accompany it.
The digital mag’s second monthly issue tracks the petty crime-ridden path of its clueless anti-hero, James Best, as he quaffs a quantity of mind-altering substances and gets lost on Hackney Downs. Well, who hasn’t? And if trippy watercolours aren’t quite your thing, there’s always companion track ‘The Wave’ – a slow-motion surge of sighing, shuddering synths – and its jazz-flavoured partner ‘Placid Acid’ to take in.
You can flick through the comic and sample both songs below, or catch up on issue one here.
