CMU Approved
Approved: Jackie Mendoza
By Andy Malt | Published on Tuesday 5 February 2019
Over the last few years, Jackie Mendoza has been developing a bilingual, experimental, Latin-influenced pop sound that often starts with a ukulele and ends up in a soft focus dream world.
All of this is in effect on her debut single for Luminelle Recordings, ‘De Lejos’, although producer Rusty Santos also encouraged her to take her sound in new directions as well.
“We transformed the sound of the ukulele and stripped down the instrumentation so the message would be the centrepiece of the song”, she explains. “It’s a big step out of my comfort zone, but I’m really excited about its final form”.
