Laki Mera deal in the sort of moody downtempo that puts them somewhere between the minimal dub-inflected adventures of The xx and the lush romanticism of The Blue Nile. Such a sonic profile makes them a perfect artist for the Just Music label, which has released atmospheric electronica from the likes of Honeyroot, Digitonal and Echaskech to much enjoyment round these parts.
‘Crater’, in its original form, can be found on the Scottish quartet’s fine debut album from last year ‘The Proximity Effect’. Fellow Glaswegians Mogwai take the song in a different direction with their retake, turning it into a stripped back, slowed down hypnotic slice of synth-noir, with the shimmering ambience dovetailing perfectly with Laura Donelly’s dreamy vocals.
