Maria Somerville

Experimental musician Maria Somerville is set to release her debut album, ‘All My People’, in March. She’s just released its second single and title track, which follows on from last year’s ‘Eyes Don’t Say It’ in building a world of sound to get lost in.

The new track, she explains, is heavily influenced by the landscape and music of the west of Ireland, where she grew up.

“I wrote it with a strong feeling of place and experience of rural Ireland”, she says. “Influenced by traditional folk motifs and all of the dots between that and contemporary experimental music, it explores the equanimity of rural freedom while touching on its supernatural aura and mysticism”.

“It’s an exploration of vulnerability, resilience, surrender and resolution”, she continues. “It’s a response to oppressive situations and finding a sense of freedom from those experiences, both personally and collectively. The space I’ve left in the music is the space I feel in the landscape”.

With the album out on 1 Mar, Somerville will be touring Ireland later the same month. Listen to ‘All My People’ here:
