Mellah has announced that he will release his latest EP, ‘Middle England’, on 25 May. The follow-up to last year’s ‘Liminality’, which was a more introspective collection of songs written around the time of his father’s death, this new release sees him looking out at the world again.

“I can’t help but feel that as an artist now, with the divide rising between people and the amount of hate being thrown around, that to not react would be a little absurd”, he tells The Fader. “One thing I’ve never wanted to do as a songwriter is take sides, I don’t think it’s black and white, left and right, good and evil, it’s much more complex”.

He continues: “People aren’t inherently good or bad, they’re just products of the environment they grew up in. All I’ve ever tried to do is observe and comment. My drive is to say something that’s real. Whatever I’m singing about I want it to ring true”.

The striking video for the EP’s lead single ‘Paseo’ explores some of these ideas. Largely, with a dark humour, it questions the arbitrary lines we draw between animals as food and animals as pets.
