Approved: Micachu – Feeling Romantic Feeling Tropical Feeling Ill
By Aly Barchi | Published on Monday 1 December 2014
Still bathing in glory (and rightly so) for her weird, pins-and-needles-y score to Jonathan Glazer’s film ‘Under The Skin’, Mica Levi – aka Micachu – last Friday stealthily shook off a 60 minute long mixtape, like it was nothing, as is her non-showy wont.
‘Feeling Romantic Feeling Tropical Feeling Ill’, a mix for all moods that’s divided into thirds as per its title, is a shot of Levi’s ‘sky’s the limit’-style scope as songwriter, DJ, composer and ‘creator’ of things, bringing in traces of her parallel lives as a pop and classical artist, and a beatmaker, of the highest and least conventional/try-hard order.
Or in the words of Demdike Stare’s DDS label, which released the tape (via physical cassette and digital download), ‘Feeling…’ moves between “tense, concrete-fuelled strings to brilliantly ramshackle tape beats and odd pop edits – all brand new work from Mica herself, spooled through her singular, totally inimitable box of tricks”.
I couldn’t (and as above, didn’t) say it better myself. Listen to a trio of miniature clips from the tape, and make it all yours for £6.99 only, now via Boomkat.
