Mutya Keisha Siobhan

Now, I think we’ve made it very clear how we feel about reunions around here. But two things allow for an exception to be made in this case. Firstly, the original Sugababes have got back together under a different name (mainly due to trademark issues, but whatever). Secondly, a large part of their decision to reform was out of pure spite, which we are totally down with. Love us some spite. There’s a third thing too, but we’ll get to that.

For anyone not paying attention, when Keisha Buchanan was pushed out of the Sugababes in 2009, she was the last original member to leave the group. Incensed, fellow origibabe Mutya Buena then launched a mostly unsuccessful trademark claim to try to stop the remaining band members from using the Sugababes name. Around the time of the Kesiha split, Mutya also started talking about the possibility of a reunion for the three original members, despite past acrimony. Then, in 2011, they did just that.

But we’re getting on for eighteen months with no new material from the trio, now going by the name Mutya Keisha Siobhan. Then last week Dev Hynes (aka Lightspeed Champion and/or Blood Orange) posted a new track up on his SoundCloud page. How was he able to post this track? Well, he’s been producing some new tracks with the girls, so he can do whatever the hell he likes, right?

So, anyway, Hynes wrote: “Just finished recording new music with Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan and the girls felt like having a bit of fun at the end of the last session”.

That “bit of fun” was a really very good track based heavily on a sample from Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Swimming Pools (Drank)’. And that brings us on to that third thing I mentioned. If we are to take Hynes at his word and assume that this is indeed the sort of thing MKS can knock off at the end of the day for a laugh, then just imagine how good the stuff they actually put some effort into will be.
