Outfit

Outfit’s music sounds like it was made late at night in a room with thin walls and lots of neighbours. It sounds like they desperately want to avoid another run in with that frankly terrifying guy who lives down the hall. But he’ll no doubt be hammering on their door again soon, because inevitably they’ll get carried away and the volume will soar. And it’s great for us when they do, though those more restrained moments do reveal layers that could otherwise have been hidden.

On the band’s debut single, ‘Two Islands’, two guitar lines pulse and swell like whale song through the verse, one heavily overdriven but kept quiet so that it gently grinds across the track as the song’s narrative slowly plays out. And then, once the cry of “I don’t know anyone else in here” hits, the volume begins to creep up, setting the scene for the euphoria of the instrumental bridge section 30 seconds later.

The single is out on 12 Sep through Double Denim, and the band will play their first London show the same night at The Shacklewell Arms in east London. Entry is free and support comes from Zulu Winter (who were formerly known as CMU Approved alumni The Molotovs).
