With a forthcoming nine-track EP titled ‘Last Words’ to promote, Canadian ‘cloud rap’ mixsmith Ryan Hemsworth’s well-timed (given the Ocean hype just now) latest edit is a remix of Frank Ocean’s ‘Thinkin Bout You’. In line with his intent to lend the original “a little more oomf without destroying it”, the mix is an exercise in restraint; its tinny drum machines and videogame synths mining a surprise lightness of being from Ocean’s more melancholic version.

He also applies that same lo-tech electronica (plus a retro-fit quote from 1976 film ‘Network’) to a bootleg of Kanye West’s ‘All Of The Lights’, chiselling at the track’s grand delusions via a commotion of synth noise and razor beats. His angle on Grimes’ ‘Genesis’, meanwhile, is just as acute, and whets a Lil Wayne sample against broken peals of Claire Boucher’s vox.

NB: Hemsworth’s SoundCloud page, as features his remix catalogue plus production projects and original material, is also worth a listen, as is this ‘Slowed Summer’ mixtape.
