Approved: Sutekh on Bach

Experimental electronic producer Sutekh hasn’t released a new studio album since 2002’s ‘Incest Live’, and for his first record in eight years he’s chosen to blend his own style with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Not a new idea, of course – Wendy Carlos famously reinterpreted Bach in the 60s and 70s, and William Orbit has just released the sequel to his 2000 album, ‘Pieces In A Modern Style’ – but what Sutekh brings to the table is undoubtedly something all his own.
The genus of the record, entitled ‘On Bach’, was a live performance in Paris last year, where various musicians were asked to play their own interpretations of Bach’s compositions. The only electronic musician involved, Sutekh worked hard on creating something that would stand up next to more traditional artists. Once the show had passed, he decided to carry on and create a complete album. The result is a mixture of staccato MIDI, sampled pipe organs, skittering percussion and a satisfyingly strange album, which you can hear in full on SoundCloud until Monday, when it is released.
