The Chats

There’s a good chance that, at a glance, you’d think you wouldn’t like The Chats. Their name. The way they look. The subject matter of their songs. The fact that they term their sound ‘shed rock’. The nagging feeling that they might be a novelty act. The even stronger nagging feeling that they’d probably be a nightmare to actually spend time with.

But, here’s the thing, The Chats are fucking great. And they’ve just announced that they will be supporting Guns N Roses in Australia at the end of the year – something that seemed utterly perplexing until I wrote that list and noticed the obvious parallels between the two bands.

There’s also the fact that The Chats are much more popular than you would expect them to be. You probably don’t need me to tell you about them, as the chances that you’re one of the tens of millions of people who have watched their videos on YouTube or streamed their tracks on Spotify seems reasonably high. But, whatever, I’m telling you about them now anyway.

Before they start knocking the shit out of the GNR stage, there’s the matter of their fourth album, ‘Get Fucked’, which is out on 19 Aug. Singles like ‘6L GTR’ and ‘Struck By Lightning’ so far suggest that they are sticking to the winning formula they found on their previous three LPs. Now their latest track, ‘I’ve Been Drunk In Every Pub In Brisbane’, confirms it once and for all.

“Brisbane is quite a bit hotter than the rest of the country”, explains frontman Eamon Sandwith. “So it’s one of those places where it’s more acceptable to start drinking earlier”.

Though, to honour the title of the new track, he goes on, “I reckon there would be 900 or so pubs that you would have to hit, and I have actually been to a good chunk of them, but if you were go to all of them, it would be hard to even remember which ones you’d been to, and which ones you hadn’t, especially if you’d got fucking pissed”.

You just missed them playing in the UK, sorry. Don’t make that mistake next time. Spending time with them does actually seem quite appealing once you get to know them.
