Tim Presley’s professional past has been chequered to say the least. His CV is a cross-hatched collation of band cameos with Darker My Love, The Strange Boys, Ty Segall and The Fall, the latter of whom he toured with as a guitarist circa their ‘Reformation Post TLC’ era. Now solo and playing as White Fence, he has this year released a two-part LP compendium in ‘Family Perfume’, the second volume of which came out via Woodsist earlier this month.
From the meandering, Syd Barrett-attuned lo-fi of ‘Balance Yr Heart’ to florid psych-rock psalms ‘She Relief’ and ‘Swagger Vets & Double Moon’, both LPs are marred by stop-starts, scratches and scrapes, stacked piecemeal from the studio floor upwards and slavishly taped on a four-track cassette recorder.
‘Family Perfume Volume 2’ piece ‘Be At Home’ is White Fence at his most melancholic, its refrain continued ad infinitum until it fades into a crestfallen chant. Album closer ‘King Of The Decade’, meanwhile, obscures its quite beautiful form and construct in a nest of discordant guitar sounds, which is no real fault and pretty archetypal of the White Fence ‘way’ at large.
