Album Review: Ash – A-Z Vol. 1 (Atomic Heart Records)

Ash

These thirteen tracks form the first half of Ash’s rather exciting and much previously reported 26 single campaign – the A-Z series – and come to us in one package while the band finish off recording the other half of the project at their Manhattan HQ.

The compilation showcases what Ash have always done best – catchy pop songs touched with rock electro influences, with opener ‘True Love 1980’ adhering to that description perfectly. Sugary sweet lyrics such as “I’ve been searching for you all of my life” feature in the rockier, upbeat, potential summer anthem ‘Joy Kicks Darkness’, whilst love song ‘Tracers’ and the tender ‘Pripyat’ provide something for fans of the dreamier side of the band.

The material is fresh and fun, and very ‘current’ sounding, yet still remains true to the classic Ash sound we have known and loved for the last eighteen years. MY
