One of the longest running shows in radio history, BBC Radio 3 show ‘Composer Of The Week’, turns 70 today. It originally launched during the Second World War in 1943 on the Home Service under the name ‘This Week’s Composer’. To mark the occasion, listeners are being asked to suggest a composer who has not previously been featured for a Christmas special later this year.

Donald Macleod, who has presented the show since 1999, told CMU: “It is a huge privilege to present a programme with such a rich history – I feel incredibly lucky to be presenting ‘Composer Of The Week’ as I genuinely think it is one of the best jobs in broadcasting. It’s terrific that the listeners get a chance to participate in the 70th birthday celebrations – over the years I have had many suggestions put to me, so who knows what they will suggest but I’m looking forward to learning about somebody new”.

Next year the show also plans to broadcast a series of live shows with the BBC National Orchestra Of Wales.
