Album Review: Booka Shade – More! (Co-Operative/Get Physical Music)
By Marc Samuels | Published on Tuesday 11 May 2010
It’s hard to believe that this is already Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier’s fourth album, as the Berlin duo have enjoyed a rapid rise in the last few years to become simply one of today’s best electronic dance acts.
From the glistening dancefloor sophistication of ‘Donut’ to the dreamy melodic glitchery of ‘Regenerate’ and ‘Teenage Spaceman’ (both of which are imbued with a subtle melancholy amid their pulsing synths and insistent beats), ‘More!’ is a polished album that touches on house, electro, techno and dubstep whilst transcending those genres to create a compelling listening experience.
Yello’s Dieter Meier, fresh from his appearance on Headman’s ‘Gimme’, turns in another effortlessly charismatic delirious vocal performance on the acid-tinged ‘Divine’, making it exactly the kind of thing Yello should be doing these days (although to be fair, they effectively are).
Sonically inventive, progressive yet accessible, ‘More!’ is as addictive a listen as its title suggests. MS
