London Mayor Boris Johnson has given the green light for the redevelopment of the site currently occupied by the Earls Court Exhibition Centre, which has been facing closure for some time. West London’s big shed is due to be demolished, and replaced by mainly residential properties.

Earls Court, which hosted many concerts and, for many years, the record industry’s BRIT Awards, as well as major conferences, opened in 1937. There has been a campaign to save the venue, with opponents to the redevelopment plans trying to persuade English Heritage to list the building.

Johnson said he was “acutely aware of the concerns” raised by local residents when confirming his controversial backing to the demolition plans, but said yesterday that: “I’m in no doubt that the development will provide a massive boost not just to this part of the capital, but to London’s wider community as well”.
