Record industry trade group the BPI has welcomed the appointment of MPs John Whittingdale and Sajid Javid to the respective roles of Culture and Business Secretary in David Cameron’s all new government.

As previously reported, ticket tout fan Javid has shifted from the culture brief to the business role in Cameron’s post-election reshuffle, while Whittingdale, a long term chair of Parliament’s Culture, Media And Sport Select Committee, joins the government in the top culture role. Meaning he has the fun job of distributing tissues to every member of the entire cultural community, who are still sobbing over last week’s election result.

Except the BPI, of course, which would never blub. And which needs to be upbeat for the good of future lobbying efforts. Instead of tears, it had words this morning, along the lines of: “John Whittingdale has been a strong supporter of intellectual property and, having been Chair of the Culture, Media And Sport Select Committee, has an enormous wealth of knowledge of the key issues facing the music sector to draw on as the new Culture Secretary”.

And: “The appointment of Sajid Javid as Secretary of State For Business, Innovation And Skills is equally welcome, given his previous work with the music industry as Culture Secretary. He has, in his new post, responsibility for the Intellectual Property Office and the Government’s policy on the Digital Single Market, and, having him shown himself a Secretary Of State that really understands business, we hope we can work with him on measures to support the music industry’s investment in creating ever greater choice and content for its consumers”.

Boom. And look out for TGE co-founder Martin Elbourne, Cooking Vinyl’s Martin Goldschmidt, Yellowbrick Music’s Meredith Cork and artist Dan Le Sac each delivering their own message to the new government as part of CMU Insights @ The Great Escape on Friday morning.
