Buzzmedia buys more music blogs

By | Published on Tuesday 1 June 2010

US blog operators Buzzmedia, which has been buying up American music blogs for a while now, and already owns Stereogum, Idolator, Absolute Punk as well as the company’s original Buzznet, has just announced six new acquisitions, including PureVolume, PopMatters, Gorilla vs Bear, The Hype Machine, Concrete Loop and RCRD LBL. The company says its network of blogs now connects with over five million music fans a month.

Buzznet boss Tyler Goldman says: “All of these web publications are widely recognised by millions of fans as leading music authorities and fit into Buzzmedia’s mission of being the leading publisher of pop culture content on the web”.

UPDATE 1. June 2010 13:55: As PopMatter’s Editor correctly points out in the comments below, Buzzmedia has not actually bought the above mentioned media. Since this story was first published we have learned that Buzzmedia has, in fact, struck up advertising partnerships with the six media mentioned above, and not taken ownership of them. In that way Buzzmedia is operating an ad sales network similar to the UK’s Sonic Network. However, according to TechCrunch, Buzz has taken a stake in Gorilla Vs Bear with a future option to buy it out right. The Hype Machine and RCRD LBL, as well as PopMatters, have confirmed no equity has changed hands as part of their partnerships with the Buzz men. No word on whether equity was part of Buzzmedia’s new relationships with Concrete Loop and PureVolume.
