Live Review: Calum Gourlay & Freddie Gavita Big Band at London Jazz Festival on 14 Nov
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 15 November 2010
Over a dozen young musicians were packed into this small at-capacity underground venue in Cambridge Circus, but their sound was never overpowering. The set consisted of original work by bassist Gourlay and trumpeter Gavita, their first two songs seemingly written with their experience of starting a big band in mind: the titles were ‘You’ll Regret It’ and ‘Nightmare’ respectively!
The compositions held together well and were notable for their long solos, that gave individual musicians time to explore the melody of the piece. The band interjected at regular points during these solos, which set up an interesting dialogue between each soloist and the rest of the band, adding a new layer to the big band format. A nightmare it may have been to set up, but no regrets I hope.
