Vivian Girls

The garage-punk trio – individually known as guitarist Cassie Ramone, bassist Katy Goodman and drummer Fiona Campbell – aka Vivian Girls are back with a new album called ‘Share The Joy’, which certainly makes us happy.

Having begun playing small shows around their native Brooklyn, the group released an eponymous first album in 2008, then building on the critical and underground success of that lo-fi debut with sophomore record ‘Everything Goes Wrong’ the following year. The group showed off a marked all-round musical progression with a recent MP3 giveaway of ‘I Heard You Say‘, which also premiered a cleaner and more melodic take on the reverb-soaked noise-pop of their previous work.

Newly signed to Polyvinyl, the girls turned to Jarvis Taveniere of fellow Brooklyn band Woods to engineer their new album, which comes out on 11 Apr (and is amazing). With this on the horizon, we asked Cassie to collate a Powers Of Ten playlist featuring some of her favourite tunes and biggest musical influences, which she duly did.

01 Cilla Black – Alfie
This song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and they have both claimed in interviews that it’s their favourite song of theirs. I saw Burt play live and when he sang it, it was so beautiful.

02 Black Sabbath – War Pigs
I’ve been getting super into Black Sabbath lately, for the hundredth time. The most amazing thing about this song is that it’s so heavy, yet most of the singing is a cappella.

03 Stacey Q – We Connect
A little-known fact about me is that mid-80s girly dance music is one of my favorite genres. Stacey Q is best known for her song ‘Two Of Hearts’, but this song is equally as catchy.

04 Flipper – (I Saw You) Shine
That. Bassline. It is the best. Such a sad, sad song.

05 Seals & Crofts – Summer Breeze
I was listening to this song a lot when we were just in Miami before the Bruise Cruise Festival. It is the perfect song for a balmy, sultry night.

06 Patience And Prudence – Gonna Get Along Without You Know
Patience And Prudence have been a huge influence on Vivian Girls over the past year and a half. Their songs are innocent and creepy. We aspire to their level of innocence and creepiness.

07 The Strange Boys – Woe Is You And Me
Really good energy and an unbeatable hook. Also, they are amazing live.

08 Benny Mardones – Into The Night
It has one of my favourite lyrics of all time: “I can’t measure my love, there’s nothing to compare it to”.

09 Widowspeak – Burnout
These guys are my friends in Brooklyn and definitely a band to look out for. Slow, moody music inspired by David Lynch.

10 Earth Girl Helen Brown – Hit After Hit
This song has a great repetitive groove. It burrows into your head and never leaves.
