Single Review: Cat Power – Dark End Of The Street (Matador)
By CMU Editorial | Published on Monday 8 December 2008
Here are the leftovers from Chan Marshall’s ‘Jukebox’ covers album, which was released earlier this year. It’s hard to believe these songs are out-takes. Included are covers of Otis Reading, The Pogues, Fairport Convention and two Aretha Franklin songs. They are all stunning. However, the most outstanding track is her cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s anti-Vietnam song ‘Fortunate Son’. This song mixes the poignant Americana classic with the maudlin crawl and Lou Reed delivery of the Velvet Underground’s ‘Oh! Sweet Nuthin’. Chan Marshall is much more tuneful than Reed, though. The music is soul-influenced with an alt-country feel supplied by her personal super-group Dirty Delta Blues. They consist of Dirty Three, Delta 72, John Spencer Blues Explosion and Lizard Music members who bed Marshall’s sublime vocals in lush arrangements like a muted soul version of the Neil Young album ‘Harvest’. There you have it, Cat Power in making good music shocker. PG
