Ring ring, calling all aspiring ‘backline technicians’ and freight agents aged 18-30. If that’s you, know this: Cato Music, a tour production company based in London, is starting its own school-for-young-roadies, the Cato Academy, which is taking email applications now.

Launching in late May, it’ll provide practical experience-based training in all facets of the live business; from tech staff, to tour, stage and production managers and assistants, to combo roadies for small bands.

And thanks to sponsorship dough from MM Band Services, Shure Distribution, Sound Moves UK, KB Events, William Morris Endeavor and Appointment Group, the course is able to grant five pay-nothing scholarships.

Find out about those, and how to apply for the Academy, by contacting info@catomusic.co.uk

Glen Rowe, one-time roadie and now boss at Cato Music, says this of it all: “Business acumen is important these days as labels are practically giving away the recorded music to promote a tour. It’s the one section of the music industry that can’t be stolen, ripped off or downloaded. The smell of a concert hall is something you can’t put in a bottle and sell”.

He added: “I am very proud of this course. It’s taught by the kind of people I love to be around. We are not teachers, we are road crew and proud of it. I want to give something back, and shape the next generation of hero roadies”.
