Chart update – w/c 14 Jun 2010

By | Published on Monday 14 June 2010

There’s some football thing going on at the moment. We know this because every single musician, soap opera cast and porn star in the land has released a single to remind us of this fact. Last week was the all important one, where football fans the country over chose their official World Cup anthem by showering it with cash. There can be but one winner, and this year it was Dizzee Rascal and scourge of the elderly, James Corden with their version of Tears For Fears’ ‘Shout’.

‘Shout’ was only released last Wednesday, putting it on the back foot with only four days to pick up enough sales to reach the number one spot. However, being performed in front of fifteen million people on the final of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ helped it along a bit, and reach the top spot it did, beating the official song of World Cup sponsors Coca-Cola, K’Naan’s ‘Wavin Flag’, which came in at number three, and FIFA’s actual official World Cup song, ‘Waka Waka (Time For Africa)’ by Shakira, which you’ll find all the way down at 38.

The original version of ‘Three Lions’ by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seeds is at number ten, which is embarrassing for the 2010 update of the song, which languishes at 28. Another oldie is ‘World In Motion’ by New Order, which is in at 22, one place ahead of ‘If I Can Dream’ by former England manager Terry Venables. Meanwhile, ‘Vindaloo’ by Fat Les is at 32, making it the second appearance of Keith Allen in the chart this week.

In terms of actual music this week, Tinie Tempah has the highest new entry with ‘Frisky’ at number two. In fact, other than a few of the football songs mentioned above, ‘Frisky’ is the only new entry on the chart this week. So, well done Tinie for reaching such a high position against all the odds. You are the true winner of the World Cup and I don’t think anyone would try to deny you the honour of heading over to South Africa to claim your trophy.

Now, the album chart, which has thankfully been left untouched by all this World Cup silliness. There’s a new number one, too. Christina Aguilera sales straight in with her latest collection of songs about how much she loves (and pretty much invented) ‘doing it’, ‘Bi-On-Ic’.

Also new this week at The Drums with their eponymous debut at sixteen, a new best of compilation from Steve Winwood at eighteen, Iyaz’s debut ‘Replay’ at 26, The Who’s ‘Greatest Hits And More’ at 27, and yet another best of collection from Jimi Hendrix (this time factoring in recent single, ‘Valleys Of Neptune’) at 29.

The charts are compiled by The Official Charts Company. When they finish, they celebrate by pulling their shirts over their heads and sliding on their knees.
