CMU Beef Of The Week #164: Tiësto v Daft Punk

Tiësto

If you’ve been sitting there all patient like just waiting for the Daft Punk backlash to begin, well good news, good old Tiësto opened the gates on that one recently. See, the DJ and producer reckons that the chart-topping dynamic duo are a bit style over substance.

Discussing all the love and acclaim his rivals in Planet Dance Music have been receiving for their new long player ‘Random Access Memories’ this year, Tiësto told The Huffington Post. “Sorry Daft Punk, but the ‘Tron’ soundtrack wasn’t that great and [the new album’s] not great, either. But because it’s Daft Punk and they’re supposed to be cool and they had the amazing pyramid at Coachella a couple of years ago and the helmets – they’re fucking cool. But the music doesn’t deliver on the hype so much”.

Now, if you’re thinking this is just sour grapes from a producer whose never quite enjoyed the chart success of his French rivals (and whose period atop the DJ Mag Best DJ Poll is increasingly a distant memory), take note, this man’s done his research. Oh yes, the Daft Punk dissing isn’t just the personal opinion of Mr Tiësto, before going public he made sure to, erm, ask two random girls at a party what they thought of ‘Get Lucky’.

Spotting how said girls seemed so excited when the Daft Punk hit came on at said bash, Tiësto says he later asked the two party-goers about the track. “I said, ‘Lemme ask you a question; do you really like this song?’ And they went quiet and were like, ‘Uh… it’s all right, it’s all right’. That’s what I mean. Because it’s Daft Punk and we want to believe the hype; we are cool people so we have to think this is cool”.

Of course the “everyone pretends to like Daft Punk because they’re cool” argument doesn’t really explain the decidedly mixed response to and performance of the duo’s 2005 album ‘Human After All’. But perhaps being French and wearing helmets was just perversely out of fashion back then. It was the year of Crazy Frog after all.
