CMU Beef Of The Week #202: One Direction v The Dallas Cowboys

I don’t know how much you know about American football, but here are a few basics to get you up to speed:

1. Not actually football
2. Helmets
3. Mauler McCall’s American football themed gang in ‘Grange Hill’ was called, ‘The Gridiron Gang’

OK, you’re basically an expert now. The other thing you should probably know is that there is a team over in that America called The Dallas Cowboys. They are from Dallas, but they are not actual cowboys. I’m not saying they’re liars, but I think the facts speak for themselves.

Every year since the beginning of time, The Dallas Cowboys, like all American football teams probably, have played a few warm-up games before the proper season starts. Four pretend games, in fact, before they start properly pretending that professional competitive sport is a serious and important thing. The third one of these warm-up run arounds they always – ALWAYS – play at their home ground. Always.

Not this year though. Why? Well, because One Direction have booked their home ground for a show that very same day. Yeah, apparently the people in charge of booking the AT&T Stadium (the team’s home since 2009), have managed to schedule in a 1D concert the same day, Saturday 24 Aug, that the team would otherwise have been expecting to run around on the grass and that.

The result is that the team will have to shift some things around in their diary, possibly ending their pre-season training in California a week early, which could put them at a disadvantage when the season actually begins. And that’s a prospect their fans are not happy about.

According to The Mirror, Cowboys supporters have been tweeting angrily since the news broke, calling out 1D for “fucking up” the team’s season, some adding that they would like to “hunt the boys down” and “punch their smug little faces”.

Now, I’m not saying that didn’t happen, but I’ve just spent quite a long time searching Twitter for such quotes and have found none. I found someone who talked about the season being “fucked up”, but ended their tweet “LMAO”, and another who simply responded “ughhhhhh”. But maybe all of the really angry people deleted their tweets and/or shut down their accounts under the weight of One Direction fans attacking them in retaliation. Because we all know how angry One Direction fans can get over the tiniest thing.

Actually, I could only find one Directioner who was angry about this. But they were really angry. Still, I found a lot more people who don’t like The Dallas Cowboys purely on the grounds that they are The Dallas Cowboys.

Sport, eh? Anyway, here are some pictures of members of One Direction in cowboy hats that I found on Tumblr.
