CMU Beef Of The Week #269: Deadmau5 v Skrillex

Does Deadmau5 mind being called an asshole? That’s the question of the day everybody. And the answer? Yes, he does mind being called an asshole. But that’s because he’s an asshole. Though I should note, it’s not me who’s calling that asshole an asshole. No. It’s the asshole’s former friend. And the asshole himself. Asshole.
So, yes, there was a minor spat this week between that Deadmau5 fella and his old buddy Skrillex, which all began when the latter started chatting about the former’s propensity to instigate minor spats with other artists. Well, that, and Deadmau5 asking of a recent collaboration between Skrillex’s Diplo joint venture Jack Ü and Master Justin Bieber: “What the fuck is this shit?”
Speaking to New York radio station Amp Radio about his former champion Deadmau5 – real name Joel Zimmerman – dissing his recent work, Skrillex said: “I’ll always have love for Joel because he put me on at an early time, but he’s an asshole. And everyone knows that, and he knows that. And that’s kinda his thing”.
On the diss and Zimmerman’s dissing, he went on: “I don’t take it personally because I’m secure with myself and what I do, I love what I do. But I almost feel bad that that’s his one way of getting attention rather than going into music and curating. I think his attitude’s changed over the last couple years. I personally have become less connected to his music because his personality is almost overshadowing that, when he is such an incredible artist”.
Ignoring the compliment in that final clause there, Deadmau5 then took to Twitter to respond to the Skrillex remarks, declaring “dont really give a fuck tbh”, before theb posting a flurry of follow-on tweets that suggested that perhaps he did.
Said tweets seem to have been now deleted, but NME captured them, and they apparently went a bit like this: “He should have brought this up when I released his first album for him. Whatever. You like what you like. [But] thanks for that pocket full of certified psychoanalysis. It’s really unfortunate I have a label. Sorry for being me”.
He continued: “At the end of the fucking day, if I’m ‘miserable / moody / negative’, then that’s just me dealing, or not dealing, with internal shit. Yes. I’m aware that I can be a fucking diva. Yes I am aware than I have more than one complex. Very fucking aware. The people you should REALLY fucking worry about, are the people who don’t know it”.
Concluding he tweeted: “So YES @skrillex, I’m SUPER SAD, I’m not as cheerful and super inspired by life like you. And I’m so SORRY I’m an asshole. But how about you let me worry about that shit. Some people don’t want to be helped. I’m scraping by life with my fuckin insecurities and successes just fiiiine. Now, give it a fucking rest and talk about cats or some shit so I can go build a PC”.
Actually, for a “minor spat”, let alone a “beef of the week”, there are some fair points in all of that. Though I think the conclusion of all this is that it’s fine to think Deadmau5 is an asshole, just not to say so. Now, go talk about cats and leave the mouse alone.
