CMU Insights at Output 2020
By CMU Editorial | Published on Wednesday 12 February 2020
CMU Insights will be at the Output conference in Belfast tomorrow presenting three sessions across the day. If you are there, look out for all of the following…
Mapping Music Careers & The NI Music Industry (11.30am)
CMU has been mapping music careers, music education and local music
industries, with an initial focus on Northern Ireland thanks to support
from Help Musicians NI. CMU’s Chris Cooke and Phil Nelson will present a
ten step pathway for understanding music careers and a brand new
taxonomy for navigating local music industries, and then suggest how
educators, local authorities, funding bodies and the music business in
Northern Ireland can better support new talent. Plus, for early-career
artists, how can you progress along your pathway into music?
Mapping The NI Music Industry: Next Steps (12.40pm)
Based on his mapping work, Phil Nelson will discuss the gaps in the
Northern Irish music industry and how they impact on new talent
embarking on their personal pathway into music. He’ll be joined by Fiona
McAuley (YMU Group) and Aine Cronin-McCartney (journalist and BBC
contributor) to discuss the NI music industry map, how local educators
and industry could be better aligned, and how the gaps he has identified
might be filled.
Distribution Revolution (2.45pm)
The role of the music distributor has changed a lot in the last two decades, with many distribution companies moving into artist and label services. What impact has this had on how artists, labels and distributors work together? And what should artists and labels consider when choosing a distribution partner? Based on the ‘Distribution Revolution’ report published by AIM and CMU Insights, Chris Cooke provides a concise guide to music distribution in 2020, while AIM’s Paul Pacifico discusses the challenges and opportunities for the independent music community.
