Robbie Williams

A round up of music and music business events happening in the next seven days…

Robbie Williams turns on Oxford Street Christmas lights. Robbie Williams is pressing an ‘on’ button wired to Oxford Street’s Marmite-sponsored Christmas lights today, coincidentally the same day his new album is out. He’s also going to sing live, as are Leona Lewis and boyband Lawson. But unlike Robbie, Leona and Lawson aren’t allowed to touch the light switch.

UK Music Video Awards. The UK Music Video Awards will take place at The Empire cinema in London’s Leicester Square this Thursday, with host Adam Buxton guiding attendees through the 30 categories that make up its constituent parts. Well, 31 if you count the public voted People’s Choice Award.

Student Radio Awards. Also taking place this Thursday, but with considerably fewer categories, is the Student Radio Association’s Student Radio Awards. Taking place at the IndigO2 venue in London’s O2 Dome complex, the ceremony will honour the finest burgeoning talent in radio who you may well be hearing a lot more of in the future – past winner’s include Radio 1’s Greg James and Absolute Radio’s Mark Crossley.

ACUMEDIA networking evening. CMU Business Editor Chris Cooke will chair a panel debate entitled ‘How to make money as a musician in the wonderful world of pirates’ at this regular networking night in Brighton, taking place at the city’s Latest Music Bar on Wednesday at 6.30pm. Entry is free.

Unconvention. Not one but three Unconvention events will take place this coming weekend in Manchester, one focused on how music and football can work together to forge social change; one on the rhyme, punk, rave, party, reggae and dance culture of the city’s Hulme and Moss Side communities; and one exploring South Asian music in the UK. Check the Unconvention website for all the details.

New releases. Well, as mentioned above, Robbie Williams has a new album out this week. It’s called ‘Take The Crown’, it features the chart-topping single ‘Candy’, and it will almost certainly be number one come Sunday (and all that despite the Radio 1 snub). Almost certainly not vying with Williams for that position but still worth a listen are Jonny Greenwood‘s new soundtrack album, and more conventional album releases from Rolo Tomassi, Cold Pumas and Ital. Meanwhile Francois & The Atlas Mountains will re-issue their 2009 album ‘Plaine Inondable’, Kitsune releases a tenth anniversary compilation, Rufus Wainwright and Paul McCartney feature amongst contributors to a new collection of Christmas songs, and Friendly Fires collate the latest addition to the LateNightTales series. Releasing singles and EPs this week are former ‘X-Factor’ finalist Frankie Cocozza, Holy Shit, Disclosure, Doldrums, The Ramona Flowers and Big Black Delta.

Gigs and tours. Well, amongst the many acts performing one-off shows in London this week Diplo, Boy Better Know, Magnetic Man and Channel One will take part in a Red Bull Culture Clash show at Wembley Arena. Soundgarden will play the Shepherds Bush Empire for the first time since 1994, Death Grips will be over at the Electric Ballroom celebrating their recent departure from Sony Music, Meursault will perform with a string section at the Islington Assembly Hall, Chromatics will have one night in Heaven, Melody’s Echo Chamber will play Cargo and Sinead O’Connor will play what is either a one-off show or the start of a five month tour featuring only four dates all in London (depending how you look at it). Also kicking off touring action this week are DJ Fresh, Bon Iver, Skream, Animal Collective, Patrick Wolf, Andrew Bird, Coheed & Cambria, Ladyhawke, Kindness, Haim, Halls, Blood Diamonds, Exitmusic, Ital and Still Corners. Plus there’s an interesting tour put together by eco-conscious promoter Make Noise featuring Radio 1’s Benji B and others where the entrance fee is one old electronic device to be recycled.
