The Overflow

Other notable announcements and developments today…

• 7digital yesterday announced it is powering a new app for Christian music consumers in the US called The Overflow, which will provide streaming access to 370,000 tracks from Christian, gospel and related genres. 7digital chief Simon Cole says: “The Overflow knows their audience well and can foster a great discovery experience through smart media partnerships and focused curation”.

• Music therapy charity Nordoff-Robins has announced Julie Whelan as its new CEO, replacing Marcus Stephan who only took on the role in February 2013. Whelan joins from the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, which she co-founded seven years ago.

• The first Online Radio Conference – that is a conference about online radio, rather than a radio conference that is online – will take place at Shoreditch’s Ace Hotel on 29 Jan. Speakers include NTS Radio co-founder Femi Edmund Adeyemi, Rinse FM presenter Carly Wilford, and Mixcloud’s Nikhil Shah. Full details here.

• Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney was hit with a “giant wave slam hazard” whilst vacationing in St Barths, which I think means he was hit by a big wave. Anyway, he dislocated his shoulder, as fans can confirm via this photo of his arm looking weird.

• One-time Guns N Roses/Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan is working on a light-hearted ‘guide to life’ titled ‘How To Be A Man (And Other Illusions)’. The book, which Duff says is also a “city guide”, will hit shops in May.

• Still-warm CMU Artists Of The Year 2014 Babymetal have shared a clip trailing their new single, ‘Road Of Resistance’. Sneak a peak at the track here.

• The mighty Akon is to release a five-part LP, his first sizeable serving since 2008’s ‘Freedom’. It will span five ‘genres’, and they are: euro, pop, urban, island and world. Akon is already streaming a track from each disc on his website, www.akon.com.

• Rap creeps Death Grips have gone and released a noisy body of instrumental tracks, block-titled ‘Fashion Week’, on YouTube. In addition, and despite the fact that they’ve already split, DG also have ‘Jenny Death’, the last half of their last-gasp dual-LP, ‘The Powers That B’, still to come… potentially on 10 Feb if this Amazon listing is right.

• Gruff Rhys is to follow up his 2011 Christmas EP with a Valentine’s Day single, titled ‘Married To Me’. The duet is a collaboration with The Earth, the band featuring fellow ex-Super Fury Animal Dafydd Ieuan. The track will be out on 14 Feb (obviously).

• Would you like a free compilation of tracks from the Erased Tapes label? Sure you would. Eleven tracks form artists including Peter Broderick, A Winged Victory For The Sullen and Nil Frahm are yours to be had if and when you create an account on the label’s website here.

• It’s sold out now, but I feel we should at least mention that PJ Harvey is going to be recording her album right in front of the ears and eyes of paying punters at Somerset House in London on 16 Jan. She and her band will be in a box that they can’t see out of, so as not to be distracted. What fun. Anyway, as I said, you can’t go, but here are details.
