Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood is to act as ambassador for the inaugural Independent Venue Week, which takes place later this month. As previously reported, IVW will commence on 28 Jan, celebrating small venues and the role they play in the music industry.

Greenwood told CMU: “I’m proud to be involved in the celebration and promotion of local gigs which gave us some of the best times in our musical life – The Joiners, King Tut’s, Jericho Oxford – just to name three brilliant venues that are still putting on top shows today. They’re all crucial for the musical development of the UK because they provide local artists with places to hone their show skills and a window to other musical worlds when a tour hits town. Some of my favourite musical memories are from these independent venues and the dedicated promoters and local crew who run them”.

Independent Label Week co-founder Sybil Bell added: “It’s fantastic for us and small venues everywhere to have the support from Colin as Independent Venue Week Ambassador. It goes to show that even when you become a band playing huge stadiums and arenas across the world as Radiohead do, cutting your teeth playing the smaller venues when you start out is something you learn so much from and never forget”.

As well as acting as the face of the IVW programme, Greenwood will co-curate a night at one of the participating venues, Oxford’s Jericho Tavern, with BBC Introducing Oxford. Full details of the line-up for that show, and the others taking place around the UK during the week-long celebration, will be announced shortly.
