Damon Albarn didn’t call Adele insecure. He would never do that

Yet more Adele? Oh, alright then. And look, Damon Albarn never called her insecure, right? And he certainly never spoke to The Sun about his discarded collaborations with the singer. Someone must have overheard him chatting with a mate or something, and taken a few things out of context.

“Here we go”, said Albarn, when quizzed about his beef with Adele by BBC Newsbeat. “I have to get this right otherwise it just becomes kind of clickbait, doesn’t it? What happened was I didn’t speak to anybody about Adele. I did have a conversation with my mate and it wasn’t in the most private space. Somebody definitely overheard it, but took very, very small details from it and cobbled them all together and presented it as something I said”.

Some of those details, so it was reported, were that her new music was “very middle of the road” and that she was “very insecure”.

However, he added: “I never called her insecure. I found when I was hanging out with her that her openness was her great strength. And clearly that was something she was channelling into her music and that’s what we talked about”.

Of course, that doesn’t mean there isn’t some sort of feud going on. After all, Adele did say to Rolling Stone recently: “It ended up being one of those ‘don’t meet your idol’ moments. And the saddest thing was that I was such a big Blur fan growing up. But it was sad, and I regret hanging out with him. None of [the music they wrote together] was right. None of it suited my record. He said I was insecure, when I’m the least-insecure person I know. I was asking his opinion about my fears, about coming back with a child involved – because he has a child – and then he calls me insecure?”

Fighting words! Retaliate Albarn! Let’s keep this thing going!

“Oh well”, he said. “She’s just reacting to what she thought I said. It’s one of those things, isn’t it? I hope she doesn’t really think that”.

Alright, not quite what we were going for, but it’ll do. And he still hasn’t retracted the comment that her music is “middle of the road”, so that’s something to cling to.
