Ed Sheeran is Spotify’s most streamed artist of 2014

Unless something pretty dramatic happens in the next three weeks, Ed Sheeran is 2014’s most streamed artist on Spotify, both in the UK and worldwide. So that’s nice. For him. He also, unlike anyone else, sold over a million albums in the UK at the same time. Don’t tell Taylor Swift.

Having used up his “fuckin buzzin” quote on the million album sales thing earlier in the week, he was left grasping when it came time to give a quote to Spotify and only managed this: “It’s a great thing to be above so many amazing artists who I’d assume would be streamed more than me!”

He might assume that because they were. At least in the single track stakes. Ed may have been streamed most as an artist and as the maker of a whole album, but worldwide Pharrell’s ‘Happy’ was the most listened to single song. In the UK that honour went to Clean Bandit, with ‘Rather Be’. Better luck next time, Edward.

Hozier also took the prize for the world’s most viral track, whatever that means, with ‘Take Me To Church’. In the UK, that honour went to Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)’. Seriously, what the fuck?

Anyway, here’s a playlist of Spotify’s biggest tracks of 2014. And if you want to check out what the hell was going on with your listening habits this year, go to spotify.com/2014
