Eddy Says: Errata (and a little moan…)

I’m having a really frustrating time with song credits at the moment. When you’re a busy DJ who gets sent the amount of CDs and download links I do, then you end up in a position where you have to rely on others to get things right.

We all know the phrase ‘human error’, and God knows I’m human. Actually God doesn’t know I’m human, because there is no God, but you know I’m human, painfully human, and come with in built erroneous behaviour.

But come on, how hard can it be to put the right CD in the right envelope? Weeks and weeks ago, Island Records sent me Tommy Sparks new CD promo, a Grum remix. As you probably know, I loved it and played it non stop for weeks. Only last week, with the help of some sharp-eared listeners, did I discover, to my horror, that the CD they sent me wasn’t Tommy Sparks at all, but some random artist on Positiva, called Reflekt.

In retrospect, I did think it was slightly odd that the lead vocal was female, but I figured Dan (Tommy Sparks) had just used a girly vocalist – as you do sometimes. The track itself was lovely, stringy, and with that sweet, light loafered production that Grum does so well. I just thought he’d done something a little bit fluffier than normal because that ‘gay electro house’ sound is so in-vogue these days.

Anyway, mistake corrected, I wrote to all the artists involved, Dan (Tommy) laughed, so did Graeme (Grum). I’ve yet to hear back from Reflekt, who either don’t check their MySpace very much or don’t give enough of a shit to return my nice email. I guess it was a happy ending and I ended up supporting a really nice track that wouldn’t normally have got the time of day on a show like The Remix.

Happy until last Friday, that is, when lightning somehow managed to strike twice in the same place, one week later; The Major Lazer track I’ve been recommending to you since Toddla T’s awesome set at Secret Garden is, as many of you may recall, ‘Baby’ (track 11 on ‘Guns Don’t Kill People, Lazers Do’). Except, again, the label have got it wrong. Track 11 on the Major Lazer promo album is actually ‘Pon De Floor’, and it has been mis-credited. Human error strikes again.

I know it’s not the end of the world or anything, but it does reflect badly, and some people out there just think I’m a fuckwit as a result of all this. Don’t get me wrong, I AM a fuckwit in many ways, and at home to Mr Cock-Up frequently, but these instances I’ve just trusted the proper authorities and been let down.

So can I just appeal to the great and good, and everybody reading this, that when you send a CD, just please make sure the tracks are credited correctly, and when you send me download links, and this is important: PLEASE LABEL THE SOUNDFILE. I get hundreds every week. My desktop is littered with MP3s, WAVs and AIFFs by Monday lunchtime. I can’t keep track of them all if they’re not fully labeled.

There’s nothing more frustrating than finding a track I like on my desktop, which just says ’01-master’ or just the name of the song. I’d have to trawl through hundreds of emails just to maybe identify what it is, and most of the time I have to just dump the track. Artists and title please, it’s not hard.

Moan over… have you seen the line up for the next Remix All-nighter?! Fuck me it’s going to be the best party we’ve ever thrown! Andy will helpfully give you all the details in the Diary section, I’m sure. Hope to see you there, the show will be going out live from the club, so it’d be nice to have some friendly faces to see this bit of history – I’ve never broadcast LIVE from a Remix night before. Have a lovely end of your summer until then.
